2. Look for invitations.

In order to persevere over the long haul, we need to feel a sense of calling. When we feel as though we are going it alone, minus a larger sense of direction on our journey, it is easy to want to give up.

God leads through invitations. We looked at the idea of a flutterby as one of the ways God clearly speaks, but invitations in life are another way he connects with us. An invitation can happen in a variety of ways, but it’s usually something as simple as someone coming to you and making a suggestion of some sort. Simple. I met my wife because of an invitation. I’d bet you met your spouse as a result of some sort of an invitation. Maybe your current job came as a result of an invitation.

In the midst of my doldrums, God came by with an invitation—actually several invitations. For me these came in a variety of ways. People who loved me exerted their faith in my behalf. The Bible’s definition of love, in a nutshell, is to hope the best and believe the best about someone.5 When we say we love someone, in the biblical sense, we believe in and hope for the best for that individual. We exert our faith for something good to happen in his or her life. Lots of people loved me as they do you. (You may not realize it but there are many who do love you. For starters, if you are in the hospital as you read this, those caring for you love you. That is authentic love, not robotic love at an hourly wage.)

Ask God to give you eyes to see those who love you. They are around you.
